The Porsche Boxster is a roadster that is fully focused on sport. Nevertheless, it masters the challenge of being suitable for everyday use with flying colours. It follows in the footsteps of the Porsche 550 Spyder, which, in the early 1950s, as a racing car, brought many drivers to the winners’ podium. Some see the Boxster or Cayman as a more affordable version of the 911.
The hallmark of the Boxster is the classic boxer engine installed as a mid-engine. The advantage of this is that the Boxster has a luggage compartment at both the front and rear. This gives it excellent everyday practicality. The Boxster is a two-seater without a fixed roof with a low seating position – a true Porsche roadster. Its name comes from a combination of the “Boxer” engine and the term “Roadster”.
In its second generation, the Porsche Cayman was added. The nimble and agile Cayman is built on the basis of the Boxster but as a coupé. All vehicles have rear-wheel drive. Both models began their journey with a 2.5L V6 boxer engine. This was water-cooled and produced 204 hp. The newer models of the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman are equipped with up to 420 hp, more than ready for the race track or the road.
In 1996, the Porsche Boxster began its journey, living up to the adrenaline-filled genes of a Porsche. The first generation was called the Porsche Boxster 986 and had 204 hp, which was a lot for that time. This series was built until 2004 and ended with an impressive 260 hp in the Boxster S 986.
The second generation, the Porsche Boxster 987, was produced and sold from 2004 to 2012. It was not much different from its predecessor, which was often criticised, but there were some visual changes in the direction of the Porsche 911. The fastest model was the Boxster 987 S, with a total of 310 hp. Based on the second generation, the coupé Cayman 987 was built from 2005 to 2013. The fixed body provides more agile, precise handling, making the Porsche Cayman the sportier of the two.
The Porsche Boxster 981 is the third generation, featuring a new aluminium hybrid body, which was significantly lighter. Together with the extended wheelbase, the Boxster became even sportier. A true Porsche racing car, developed for the road. It was built from 2012 to 2016. From the Boxster 981 onwards, there were the Boxster GTS and Boxster Spyder versions. The latter came with an impressive 375 hp. One year later, from 2013 to 2016, the Cayman 981 was produced. This had slightly more hp than the Boxster 981, and instead of the Boxster Spyder, the Cayman 981 GT4 with 385 hp was introduced.
The current generation of the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman received a new name suffix. From now on, the models are called 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. This is a reference to the Porsche 718, a successful race car from 1953. It won many races, and the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are meant to continue this success story, new and improved. Instead of a V6 engine, a four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger is now installed. The two models have been produced since 2016 and are called 718 Boxster 982 and 718 Cayman 982. In the smallest version, the engine delivers a solid 300 hp. The fastest is the 718 Boxster Spyder, on par with the 718 Cayman GT4 with a blistering 420 hp.
Both vehicles come in various versions, such as the Boxster S / Cayman S, T, R, GTS, or GTS 4.0. The Porsche Boxster also has the Spyder, and the Porsche Cayman has the GT4. All models have one thing in common: to master the concentrated sportiness of these road-legal racing cars, only original Porsche Boxster wheels and Cayman wheels are suitable!
